New Improvement had been made in Star war by Harrison Ford

The Force is a part of film history now with the Blu-ray release in the rearview mirror. Disney and JJ Abrams are gearing up for the next installment in a few years, but there are plenty of behind the scenes stories tide you over in the meantime. Abrams made an appearance at the Tribeca Film Festival recently to talk about the process of making The Force Awakens.

One of the topics he discussed was the head of almost crushing Harrison Ford. It was in 2014 when the studio showed that the 71-year-old Ford was injured during filming. Apparently a hydraulic door malfunctioned, causing a broken ankle as an actor was beaten to the ground. Abrams admits that the multi-week production hiatus not have come at a better time.

The first scenes filmed with Rey and Finn did not work. The relationship came off as "controversial" and the set up was wrong. With the free-time, Abrams was able to rewrite a large part of the interaction between the characters

So, perhaps without broken ankle Harrison Ford, The Force Awakens would have been a much more difficult film. You might not even like Rey or Finn. Of course, many moviegoers still do not like how close the plot was to A New Hope. Abrams also defended his approach to the first new Star Wars film at the festival. He pointed to the need to recover the story of the prequels - perhaps a tacit admission that the prequels were garbage.

The agreements were a conscious decision to put new characters in familiar environments. There are some problems with old characters were. Abrams admits he almost could not convince Mark Hamill to return as Luke. As anyone knows who has seen the movie (spoilers), Luke appears only in the last scene of the film. Hamill was afraid it would come off as stupid for him to stand at the end.

Abrams finally brought him around by pointing out that the entire plot of the film revolves around finding Luke. It was logical for him to appear at the end, and it certainly helped that Mark Hamill was while shooting the same age when Alec Guinness was when he first played Obi-Wan.
